DCU open day
On Friday the 17th of November, my year got to go to the DCU open day, which we were all really excited for.
On the way to DCU we were all handed out a timetable each, to figure out what lectures we wanted to go to and which ones we would have time for. We were told to try and fit in four lectures, to get as much out of the experience as possible. I decided to go to psychology, general nursing, sports science and health, and health and society. Sadly I wasn't able to make health and society but from what I heard from my friends that did go, it sounded like I would've found it really interesting and I would've benefited from going.
We got to DCU at about 10:30 and my first lecture, psychology, wasn't until 11:15. Since I had some time to kill I decided I'd have a look around, to make sure I knew where I needed to be the whole day. I was surprised by how so much was there, such as cafés, pharmacies and shops.
At 11:15-11:45 I sat in the psychology lecture. I have always thought that I wanted to do psychology so I was really excited to learn more about it. The professor was really lovely and made us all feel welcome, she told us about the course and what it entails. After she was finished speaking, she asked one of her students to talk who was doing his final year in DCU, he told us how much he loved the course and the campus. I loved learning more about psychology.
The second lecture I attended was general nursing. The lecture was only 30 minutes long but I wished it was longer, even though nursing would not be my first choice, I was fascinated by the things the professor was saying. He told us the points we would need and the different specialties you could practice in, he informed us that you almost always don't work in the same specialty your whole career. A student from his class spoke to us also, and told us how much he loved the course. I was never very interested in nursing but after DCU I might be considering it as an option.
The final lecture that I went to was sports, science and health, which I have to say was my least favourite of the day. I thought I would really enjoy it but it wasn't for me. A lot of my friends liked the sound of the course, but I think I'd prefer psychology or nursing.
All and all it was a great day out and was such an amazing experience to find out what I might be doing when I go to college
