First Aid
Our first aid course started on Monday the 16th of April, it was only three days long but we learnt so much.
We were slit up into our form classes for the course, my class had Tony as our instructor. Tony was really easy to lean from, he explained everything really well and made the three days really fun for us all.
The first day was mainly just theory and we learned a lot of acronyms to remember different first aid procedures. We also learned how to make two different type of slings, one for a dislocated shoulder and one for an injury below the shoulder that needed elevation, we practiced them multiple times until we could do it perfectly.
On the second day we did a recap of everything we had learned the day before, we were told to all wear our tracksuits as we would be doing the practical part of the course. We watched videos of people giving CPR and instructional videos on what to do if you are ever in a situation that someone needs first aid. Tony taught us how to give CPR on babies, children and adults and how to use an AED, we learned what to do if someone was choking and how to give the hemlock manoeuvre. We also learned how to put somebody into the recovery position and what to do if someone has asthma or is short of breath. I personally found the second day the most interesting of the three as I felt i learnt the most I could about how to save someone. Tony told us that the next day we would be having our written and practical tests and he said he was confident that we would all pass.
On the third day we recapped again, and learnt a bit more about first aid, but we finally got to finish the course by doing our test. We all thought the test was going to be a lot harder than it was, but because we were all interested in what we learned and really listened, my whole class passed.
I didn’t realise before doing this course how important it really was and I’m so happy that this was apart of my TY course as I now feel I can help someone in need of first aid.
